Just before the sun rose on Sunday morning, hundreds of geese from southern Alberta’s flight zone gathered to drink and preen. The day was far from over and the birds were finally going to be returned to the wild after spending the last few months preparing for their journey.
“The biggest challenge for wild geese is that they spend a lot of time in the wild eating grasses and they’re not as reliant on humans as other birds,” said Kate Schofield, who works with the wildfowl conservation program at Paddle Prairie Wildfowl Preserve. “The animals need a lot of land to move around on, so they need to learn how to get there and back.”

When they have finished preening, the geese are ready to fly. As they leave the park, the flock spreads out and takes to the skies, gently navigating the lakes and rivers of southern Alberta.

Paddle Prairie Wildfowl Preserve is home to dozens of wildfowl species, many of which have found a new home thanks to a partnership with Ducks Unlimited Canada. Since 2006, the park has been host to the Paddle Prairie Wildfowl Feeding Project, which brings wildfowl from around the world to gather on the open prairie.
The project was funded by an inheritance from a Florida woman, who left a bequest to Ducks Unlimited Canada in her will.
